    Overcoming Barriers to Fair Housing helps real estate professionals interrupt stereotypical thinking so they can avoid fair housing pitfalls and provide equal professional service to every customer or client. Participants will examine the history of bias in real estate, learn about the mind science of identity, study how implicit bias can result in fair housing violations, and engage in interactive exercises to enhance communication skills and business relationships with clients of all backgrounds.  
    Provides 3 hours Real Estate Related CE, 2 hours Current Trends/Issues PLE. 
     This satisfies the NAR Fair Housing Course Cycle 8 (1/1/25 - 12/31/27).

    A supervising broker has many different responsibilities, to include on-boarding new agents, overseeing contracts, managing finances, supervising agents and office staff, just to name a few. This class will focus on broker management obligations in Virginia using real life scenarios and resources prepared by the Virginia REALTORS®.

    General Counsel

    Laura Murray started working at Northern Virginia Association of REALTORS® (NVAR) as a legal intern the summer between her second and third year of law school. After graduation, she accepted a full-time position as an attorney at NVAR. Three years later, an opportunity opened up at Virginia REALTOR® that would allow her to use the Regulatory Law Certificate she had earned in law school; she applied and was hired! Just over three years and three promotions later, she was made General Counsel.

    Doug Wolfe is a principal broker/owner and is a member of the Hampton Roads Realtors Association. He has over 26 years of real estate experience, has seven designations, and is an advocate for REALTOR® education. He is a tenured instructor of the Virginia REALTORS® GRI program, and teaches SRES and Code of Ethics courses for local associations.

Participants will gain the knowledge and tools necessary to increase their listings and expand their business, effectively demonstrating and communicating their unique value propositions to seller clients.  The curriculum emphasizes a comprehensive understanding of the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, ensuring participants can uphold these principles in their professional conduct. By understanding and adhering to these ethical guidelines, professionals can protect the public by promoting honesty, transparency, and fairness in all transactions. The course also covers the importance of complying with state license laws when representing sellers, which includes safeguarding consumer interests and ensuring that transactions are conducted legally and ethically.  Learning outcomes include: Increase listings and grow their business. Demonstrate and communicate their value package to seller clients. Understand and apply the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. Understand and comply with state license laws when representing sellers. Understand and apply methods, tools, and techniques to provide the support and services that sellers want and need. Understand that the representation skills required to represent sellers encompass a comprehensive understanding of the legal duties and license law responsibilities.

    Barrie Bowers

    Barrie B. Bowers is an attorney with in-house experience for a major apartment real estate investment trust who understands the needs of property management and other real estate companies. She has extensive experience in a full range of property management issues, real estate transactions, outdoor advertising, and landlord-tenant and fair housing laws—including representing clients before the Virginia Real Estate and Fair Housing Boards. 

    Barrie provides in-house training on a broad range of property management legal issues and has expertise in the negotiation of contracts with providers of voice, data, and video including cable and telephone companies. For real estate clients, Barrie regularly handles sales, acquisition, and other property transactions, ranging from easements to single asset purchases to portfolio transactions. Barrie’s diligent approach from the beginning to the end of any project helps maintain a focus on the finish line while anticipating and attending to the details of the project along the way.

    For more than a decade, Ryan has honed his knowledge of Virginia’s housing market. Before stepping into his current role of Virginia REALTORS® Chief Economist, Ryan served as the association’s Deputy Chief Economist. Prior to joining our team, he served as the President of research consulting firm LSA Planning, as an Urban Planner for the City of Alexandria, and as part of the research team at the Center for Regional Analysis at George Mason University. Even before joining VAR full time, Ryan spent years contributing to our research, including the monthly Virginia Home Sales Report and our quarterly regional market reports. He holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from James Madison University and a master’s degree in urban planning from Virginia Tech.

    Deputy Chief Economist

    Prior to joining Virginia REALTORS® as the Deputy Chief Economist, Sejal worked as an Economist at the US Securities and Exchange Commission. She has also contributed to economic research and analysis at the American Bankers Association, Freddie Mac, and The Advisory Board Company. She graduated with a master’s degree in Finance from the University of California San Diego and a bachelor’s degree in Economics from George Mason University.
